What We Do

Throughout the Smoketree Institute Courses we request the help of the horses to assist in developing the three "C's". The "C's" assist in enhancing personal awareness and leadership skills.

Communication - the study of energy recognizing a variety of pathways: physical, quantum, and nonlocal.
Compassion - viewing life experiences from a non-judgmental, open-minded perspective.
Creativity - allowing for insights that may not be realized using a typical linear thought process.

Who We Are

The Smoketree Institute is part of an emerging international field, Equine Guided Education, where horses model the essential qualities of trust, authenticity, and willingness of spirit, in order to assist us in understanding ourselves. Dr. Sandra Thorpe, educator and horsewoman, has spent the past six years studying this new approach to learning and has combined her 35 years of teaching and leadership experience to develop the Equine Encounters program which directs your personal growth and leadership skills in ways that classrooms and auditoriums cannot. Many colleges and universities including the University of Arizona and Prescott College in Arizona now offer courses for credit based on horse / human interactive learning.

How We Do It

Textbooks, lectures, listening to tapes or watching DVD's do not raise the level of consciousness quite like experiential hands on practice. We combine self awareness with the actual ability of the horse to reflect and mirror intentions using the information in a process of self discovery. Learning then occurs at an accelerated pace through insights observed by inviting the horse to participate into our journey. Every "Equine Encounter" is followed by an interactive discussion, journal reflection, action plan and personal coaching.
